Currently, the world starch industry continues to develop, and the prospects for its development are due to the widespread use of products of deep processing of grain. According to Euromonitor International, global starch production in 2017 exceeded 110 million tonnes. Compared to 2010, production growth amounted to 54%, or 38.9 million tons.

The world's largest producers are China (49.2 million tons), the United States (11.5 million tons), Japan (6.2 million tons), Indonesia (5.5 million tons), Thailand (3.1 million tons). About 10% of the world starch production (11 million tons) is concentrated in the EU countries.

In the period from 2010 to 2017. the highest production growth rates were recorded in China (+23 million tons). By 2020, a further increase in production is expected by another 12.4 million tons.

During the period under review, Indonesia increased the production of starch products by more than 2 times. By 2020, production is projected to increase to 2.4 million tons.

Thailand increased the production of starch products by 1.2 million tons (58%). By 2020, a further increase in production is expected to reach 0.9 million tons.

In 2016, world exports of corn starch amounted to 1,461 thousand tons. In the period from 2010 to 2016. the volume of world exports increased by 8.9% (119.1 thousand tons). According to forecasts, by 2020, world exports will amount to 1,539 thousand tons.

In 2016, the largest exporters of corn starch were countries such as Turkey (160.2 thousand tons), Spain (151.5 thousand tons), India (137.1 thousand tons), China (132.8 thousand tons) ), Germany (100, thousand tons) - these countries provide up to 47% of world exports.

In the period from 2010 to 2016. the largest export growth was recorded in Turkey - the country increased exports from 12 thousand tons to 160 thousand tons. According to forecasts, by 2020, the volume of Turkish exports of corn starch is expected to remain.

India also significantly increased its trade in corn starch - from 35.7 thousand tons to 137.1 thousand tons. By 2020, the country is expected to reduce exports in this category in favor of growing domestic consumption.

A decrease in the export of corn starch was noted in China (from 366 thousand tons in 2010 to 132.8 thousand tons in 2016), the USA (from 163 thousand tons to 81 thousand tons), the Republic of Korea (from 95 thousand tons up to 54 thousand tons). The decrease in exports of these products from China is due to the dense population of the country and its continued growth, as a result of which the powerful food industry works mainly to provide the domestic market. In the Republic of Korea, consumption is also growing, and the limited free space does not allow for a significant increase in production. In the USA, a redistribution of production capacities was noted in favor of other products of deep processing of grain.

The share of corn starch in world imports of other starches in 2016 amounted to 23%, or 1395.5 thousand tons. The volume of imports of products significantly correlates with changes in world prices for a particular type of starch. In the period 2010-2016. average world prices for starch indicated a fall of up to 20%. At the same time, by 2016, the average import price of US $ 487 per tonne of corn starch, and wheat - US $ 376 per tonne, which leads to an overall decrease in world imports of corn starch in the period under review to 38%.

Indonesia is the world's largest importer of this type of product - in 2016, the import into the country amounted to 173 thousand tons, which is 56 tons less than the country's import in 2010.

The countries of the European Union mainly trade in corn starch within the united economic and political region. Germany is both a major exporter and importer of corn starch; in 2016, 165 thousand tons of products were imported to the country, which exceeded the country's exports in this category by 65 thousand tons.

Despite the general decline in world imports of corn starch, in general, it remains in demand in some countries, which continue to increase imports. US imports for this type of product in 2016 amounted to 65.6 thousand tons, which is 15.4 thousand tons more than in 2010.

Thus, sales in the global starch market in the forecast period (2018-2020) will continue to grow by an average of 3.8% per year. By the end of 2020 - beginning of 2021, they will reach 39.3 million tons, which will exceed the value of 2016 by 20.6%.
